News from Stoney Bridge
The versatility of the Stoney Bridge flagship sire Ekraar was further emphasized at Queen's Birthday weekend when his 2 year old daughter Extra Explosive backed up from her convincing Counties win with a dominant victory in the Listed Castletown Stakes at Foxton on Monday. This victory credited her sire Ekraar with his second 2 year old winner this season from just the three individual runners, his other victor being the Hughes and Wiles trained Brave Warrior. Extra Explosive was bred and is raced by Explosive Breeding Limited whose principal figure Mr Luigi Muollo bred the filly from his 3-win mare Explosive, a daughter of Exploding Prospect. Explosive finished third in the same race in 2001. The Muollo family are no strangers to the progeny of Ekraar having bred and raced Ekraar's inaugural New Zealand 2 year old winner in Gigino who also credited Ekraar with his first Stakes winner on New Zealand turf. Gigino is now in Sydney under the watchful eye of ex-Kiwi trainer Chris Waller. Extra Explosive races from the Matamata barn of Andrew Scott and benefitted from a masterful front-running ride from veteran jockey David Walsh who was impressed by the professionalism of the filly with her ability to gallop straight in the testing conditions and her overall demeanour claiming her to be a quiet relaxed filly with speed and gameness as well as possessing intelligence. The win capped off a great weekend for both Andrew Scott and the Muollo family with Scott winning in Brisbane with both Pennacchio and Miss Keepsake ( Queensland Oaks ) whilst Muollo's brother Tony is also a stakeholder in another impressive Brisbane Winter Carnival winner in Pressday, a son of Domesday, with the latter like Ekraar being a son of Red Ransom. Ekraar's own sire Red Ransom and his sons are currently experiencing a purple patch with another son in Intikhab siring the weekend's English Oaks winner Snow Fairy. Extra Explosive will now be targeted at the Listed Ryder Stakes at Otaki on July 31 and the Wanganui Guineas early in the new season.
