News from Stoney Bridge
Group 1 winning filly Eileen Dubh continued her relentless march towards the New Zealand Oaks in March with a facile victory at Woodville on Saturday.
Her five rivals proved no match for the three-year-old daughter of Stoney Bridge stallion Storm Creek, as she powered home by a length and three-quarters in the 1400m contest.
On her previous start, Francis Finnegan's charge had turned in a huge performance to claim the Group 1 Levin Classic on November 27th, and she showed all of her sparkle on Saturday following a mid-season break. She will now target the Group 3 Desert Gold Stakes as her next stepping stone towards Classic glory at Trentham.
Finnegan told www.thoroughbrednews.com.au : "People thought she was a filly that had to lead but we are now getting her to settle, as she would have to when running 2400m in the Oaks.
"She does a lot of walking and stamina work and was only 70 per cent today but Jonathan [Riddell] said she did it easy. She's only had three pieces of fast work since she won the Levin Classic but is a very clean winded horse."
Eileen Dubh is now the winner of four of her 11 starts and over $173,000 in prize money. Her victories have helped boost her sire Storm Creek to third place in the list of leading third season sires in New Zealand by earnings, behind his stud mare Ekraar.
