News from Stoney Bridge
Stoney Bridge stallion Ekraar was represented by his first Group 1 winner on Saturday when Ekstreme turned in a huge performance at Trentham to triumph in New Zealand's Group 1 Captain Cook Stakes.
The four-year-old filly has already recorded one landmark for her sire by becoming his first Group winner worldwide when she scored in the Group 3 Lowland Stakes, also at Trentham, in February and she added to that record in fine style on Saturday.
Trained by Bryce Revell, Ekstreme showed plenty of promise at middle distances last season. Only beaten three lengths when eighth in the Group 1 New Zealand Oaks in March after an unlucky run, the filly crossed the Tasman to finish a narrow second in the Group 3 Doomben Roses.
Dropped back to sprint trips this season, the filly finished a good sixth in the Group 2 Auckland Breeders' Stakes a fortnight ago.
Partnered by Opie Bosson, Ekstreme made the most of her undoubted stamina when charging to the lead in Saturday's NZ$200,000 contest and tenaciously maintaining her advantage to the line to triumph by a long neck.
Ekraar, who shuttles to Stoney Bridge from Italy where he stands under the Shadwell banner, is enjoying an excellent season in New Zealand, with a number of promising runners including Clapton, who finished a fast-finishing third in the Group 1 New Zealand Guineas at Christchurch.
The son of Red Ransom was himself a top-class middle distance performer. Having broken the two-year-old track record over 7f at Goodwood in the Group 3 Vintage Stakes, Ekraar went on to race with the best for the next four seasons.
Placed five times at the highest level, including an agonisingly close second in the Group 1 Hong Kong Vase, he triumphed in the Group 1 Gran Premio del Jockey Club over 1m4f at San Siro on his final start, defeating three Group 1 winners in the process.
Ekstreme's victory caps a fantastic week for the Stoney Bridge stallions which began last Friday when Eileen Dubh became Storm Creek's first southern hemisphere Group 1 winner when triumphing in the Levin Classic at Otaki. In addition, Ekstreme was bred by Karaka Group Ltd, the breeding arm of Mike Tololi's Stoney Bridge operation.
Ekraar and Storm Creek were Stoney Bridge's foundation stallions when the stud was founded in 2004. Both now stand at Stoney Bridge Waikato where Ekraar commands a fee of $10,000+GST and Storm Creek, now resident in New Zealand after initially shuttling from California, stands for $5,000+GST.
