First stakes winner for Mr. Nancho
Mon, 01 Mar 2010

NACHO MAN became the first stakes winner for his sire Mr. Nancho on Saturday with a hugely impressive performance in the Listed Waikato Stud Slipper at Matamata.

The strapping son of Stoney Bridge's Argentine champion miler was rated on the pace in third place for much of the 1200m contest, running three wide.

Jockey Craig Grylls asked the gelding for his effort at the home turn and the issue was quickly settled as Nacho Man stormed into a commanding lead and powered home to score by a very easy two and a half lengths.

That victory more than atoned for a somewhat disappointing run from Nacho Man on his last start in the Karaka Million where he hung badly. Clearly a right handed track is more to the liking of this talented gelding.

Trained by Paul and Mike Moroney, Nacho Man became his sire's first trial winner when scoring at Cambridge in October, and also notched Mr. Nancho his first racecourse victory with an impressive display at Woodville in January.

Nacho Man's triumph on Saturday was especially sweet as he was bred by Stoney Bridge Thoroughbred Ltd. Out of the The Jogger mare El Coriero, he is a half-brother to the winning Shinko King filly China Doll and the trial winner Mascara, by Hawkeye. El Coriero also has a yearling filly by Hawkeye.

Nacho Man was purchased for $27,000 from the 2009 Festival sale.

Mr. Nancho, who scored in the Group 1 Gran Premio de Palermo by a massive 16 lengths in his native Argentina, stands at Stoney Bridge Waikato.
